How to choose a jurisdiction for a crypto licence

  1. Business model

Exchange, custody, transfers and token services fall under different permissions, so the list of activities comes first.

  2. Target markets

Where the clients are and how they are reached decides which authorisation and passporting rules apply.

  3. Budget and timeline

Capital, local substance and ongoing compliance costs differ several times between regimes.

Frequently asked questions

Which jurisdiction is the fastest?

Registrations in some offshore jurisdictions take weeks; authorisation in the EU under MiCA takes months. The exact timeline depends on the activities and on how complete the application is.

Can one licence cover several countries?

A CASP authorisation under MiCA can be passported across the EU. Most other licences and registrations cover one country.

Do I need local substance?

Most regimes expect local directors, an office or staff, scaled to the activity. The requirements are listed on each jurisdiction page.
